A little history
For the past 5 years I have been making a wide variety of high quality, African style drums. My journey into drum-making began during a college program in Belize where the spirit of Africa still lives strongly. My first teacher in both playing and making drums was my friend Emmeth Young, a true cultural warrior from the small Creole village of Gales Point Manatee. Drums have been made, played, and danced to continuosly since the village's inception over 150 years ago. Emmeth taught me to make drums in the traditonal fashion, carving out a shell from a single tree trunk.I have now carved over fifty drums from such woods a cherry, coconut, black walnut, cedar, poplar, apple, yellow pine,maple, and mahogany. Most recently I began making slat style drums in the mountains of North Carolina and travel throughout this country and others spreading Gumbo Limbo Vibrations! |
